In Mexico 44 people died in a prison riot believed to have been a coy to distract an escape by some of the cartel members imprisoned there. It was reported that a prison in the city of Apodaca, north of Monterrey a riot broke out as members of the Gulf Cartel & Los Zetas Cartel clashed. It is alleged that corrupt officials (warders) also played a part in the whole outbreak.

As news of the riot broke, family members of some of the prisoners protested and demanded to know about their family members imprisoned there. The director & supervisor of security were questioned about the riot. The prison is alleged to have been 80% above it’s capacity due to many members of cartels being imprisoned, since the Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared war on drug cartels with the backing of the military.

The Los Zetas started as the military wing of the Gulf Cartel (wikipedia) but later broke away due to the Gulf Cartel leader being imprisoned. They are now one of the largest cartels in the Gulf area.
